Suppose you cycle every morning over the busy Parnassusweg to your job in an office building and then lose your job anyway. As of 1 July 2026, the WW will change drastically. Less administration, faster first payment and more flexible opportunities to earn additional income should make the difference in a city with high rents and many international jobs.
Faster First Payment
Through direct linkage with payroll systems, the UWV will pay out the first benefit within two weeks instead of the current four to eight weeks. This prevents acute financial worries for those who suddenly find themselves without income, for example in the Zuidas where many expats work.
Simplified Daily Wage Calculation
The daily wage will henceforth be based on the average of the last twelve months. Holiday allowance is automatically included, bonuses are spread out and the maximum daily wage rises to € 287.50. Seasonal workers no longer need to request a separate calculation.
Earning Additional Income During WW: More Flexibility
The strict proportionality rule disappears. Up to 40 percent of the previous wage may be earned additionally without the entire benefit disappearing. Only the amount above that will be deducted. This should make part-time work more attractive in a labour market full of flexible contracts.
Adjusted Job Application Obligations for Older Employees
Those over 60 with at least thirty years of work history receive a lighter job application obligation. The UWV will draw up a personal plan together with the employee, with more emphasis on coaching and retraining.
What Does Not Change?
The duration of the benefit remains dependent on the work history: minimum three, maximum 24 months. In case of summary dismissal, the Rechtbank Amsterdam still assesses whether there is culpability.
Preparation for Employers
- Check whether your payroll administration aligns with the new UWV linkage
- Have settlement agreements (vaststellingsovereenkomsten) reviewed by a specialist
- Inform employees about the more flexible additional earnings scheme
