When switching from benefits to unemployment benefit (Unemployment Act) in Amsterdam, more lenient asset rules apply than under the municipal Participation Act. The UWV does not apply a strict asset threshold like the Amsterdam benefits threshold of €7,575 (2024 for single persons), but tests on 'disposable income'. Savings above €6,130 (2024) partially reduce the WW benefit: for every €4 above the threshold, €1 less benefit. Partner income is fully taken into account, which has extra impact in more expensive districts like Amsterdam-South. The WWB asset threshold lapses, but own home (also in popular Amsterdam markets) and household effects remain exempt. WW duration: maximum 24 months, depending on employment history – crucial for Amsterdammers in flex sectors such as hospitality and tech. Report changes to UWV within 7 days; in Amsterdam you can go to the UWV office on Rokin or digitally via werk.nl. Difference with Amsterdam benefits: no build-up period, but asset growth after dismissal (e.g. via temporary jobs in the Zuidas) counts as income. Example: a dismissal compensation paid out as assets reduces your WW. Sickness Benefit follows the same WW rules. UWV checks via payslips, bank data and sometimes via municipal linkages. Advantages in Amsterdam: higher benefit (70% of salary), essential with high rents. Back to benefits after WW? Then the Amsterdam asset threshold applies again with review by the Work and Income Department (DWI). Calculate your WW via the UWV calculator and check local subsidies with the municipality. Legal basis: WW Article 24. Find work via Amsterdam's outplacement offer or Werkse to preserve rights.
